Threat of Endangerment: The Mountain Gorilla :: essays research papers

  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The mountain gorilla was first discovered roaming the Virunga Volcanoes in Rwanda (von Beringe, 2002, p.9). German Captain Robert von Beringe and his African soldiers stumbled upon two mountain gorillas around the volcanic region on October 17, 1902 (von Beringe, 2002, p.9). Von Beringe captured and killed one of them and sent the body to the Zoological Museum in Berlin, Germany. Professor Paul Matschie, who worked with the museum, identified the gorilla as a new class and named it after its founder: Gorilla beringei beringei (von Beringe, 2002, p.10). Twenty-three years later, American naturalist Carl Akeley persuaded King Albert of Belgium to turn a Belgian trust territory, near Rwanda, into a national park for the conservation of mountain gorillas. The Albert National Park, later named the Virunga National Park, was the first park established in Africa (Ngowi, 2002).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Between 1960 and 1980, American zoologists studied mountain gorillas. George Schaller spent one year doing basic study on the animal. Dian Fossey devoted her life to extensively studying and protecting mountain gorillas. Fossey moved to Rwanda to be closer to the animals and set up the Karisoke Research Center in 1967 (Robbins et al., 2001). She directed the center for thirteen years, learning the habits and gaining the acceptance of the mountain gorillas (Robbins et al., 2001). In 1983, she wrote a book, Gorillas in the Mist, to promote public awareness of the troubles mountain gorillas face. Her memoir was later made into a movie. Her relationship with mountain gorillas and concern for their safety was unmatched. She created an organization to save gorillas in 1978 called the Digit Fund, named after a mountain gorilla Fossey was close to (Robbins et al., 2001). After her mysterious death in 1985, the organization switched its name to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. Fossey contributed to much understanding of mountain gorillas.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Dian Fossey was so driven to protect mountain gorillas because they are an endangered species. Several threats have kept their population from thriving. One threat is disease, especially those which humans are equally as vulnerable to (Ferber, 2000). Tourists enjoy visiting the mountains of Rwanda to admire the gorillas and encourage their safety; however, humans help put mountain gorillas at risk. In 1999, a team of researchers with the Journal of Parasitology noted roundworm parasites in the feces of mountain gorillas (Ferber, 2000). These parasites normally have affected only humans through contaminated water. Early, in 1988, blood and tissue samples of several mountain gorillas indicated measles infection (Ferber, 2000).

An Essay on Jane Addams

The argument Addams makes that â€Å"educational matters are more democratic in their political than in their social aspect†, I believe she is referring to the long struggle between the teachers and the Chicago School Board. The Chicago School Board was politically corrupt. Many of the teachers and custodial engineers were friends of politicians who secured their positions in exchange for certain kickbacks. The school board maintained control over the school administration for many years. During which they restricted the types of children that were able to attend the public schools and they restricted the amount of freedom and authority the teachers were able to use in their classrooms. On several different occasions the â€Å"Dunne† members of the board attempted to lower the restriction on the teachers side but were warned-off with tales of the politicians and the difficulties previous attempts encountered. Addams' describes the situation between the superintendent and the Teachers' Federation as â€Å"an epitome of the struggle between efficiency and democracy† (171). She clearly understood both standpoints and why they both felt compelled to make their argument, although she does mention that they both â€Å"inevitably exaggerated the difficulties of the situation† (171). As a member of the school board, Addams tried to influence the Federation to make changes that would be in the best interest of the children, but after the legal struggle and following months of constant change, many of the important measure were withdrawn. Although she did have an opportunity to debate these measures in a democratic way, they were dismissed because of (more or less) political reasons. Jane Addams' role for education in an effort to reform the city was to take the disruptive delinquents the public schools rejected and accept them unconditionally into the settlement. Give them the opportunity to learn domestic training and trade teachings. She felt that even people of lesser means were interested in the same topics as the â€Å"well-to-do† people of society. She also thought that if you give a child encouragement and a sense of self-worth combined with an opportunity to become something in society that they would try to become productive. Hull-House offered educational opportunities for anyone who wanted to attend with no political or economic restrictions. Hull-House also offered the opportunity for recreation, such as supervised sports matches, which hundreds of youths seemed to prefer. Jane Addams' makes an important statement that â€Å"The educational activities of a Settlement, as well as its philanthropic, civic, and social undertakings, are but differing manifestations of the attempt to socialize democracy, as is the very existence of the Settlement itself,† (206). That illustrates her idea of education, which I believe is what she wanted for the public school system, but was unable to achieve while she was a member of the board. The Reasons I Chose Music - 2094 Words

I chose to use the medium music to explore how the music I listen to, sing, and play help me deal with stress. The reasons I chose music as my chosen medium are because I feel like it represents me the best. I find it very easy to relate to music, there is something about the lyrics, music, the instrument used to play the songs, and the emotions you can put into and hear in music that draws me in. Music makes me feel free, it allows me to escape from my troubles, my mind, and the world. Everything disappears and I become lost in the sounds and emotions it produces. Another reason for choosing music as my medium is the fact that I grew up with it. My siblings had all started piano and singing lessons by the time I was born, so as a baby I†¦show more content†¦On days I have class this time is usually when I am on the bus travelling to and from the college, so I get lots of time for my music on those days. Simply put I love music, and it has become an essential part of me, that invokes not only happy and some sad memories of my childhood but thoughts of how I have my whole life ahead of me to create new memories as well. The 11 songs I chose are the ones that have helped me deal with past stress the best and they are: parts of â€Å"Fur Elise†, â€Å"I Won’t Back Down†, â€Å"Go Way From My Window†, â€Å"Poor Wayfaring Stranger†, â€Å"Amazing Grace†, â€Å"Danny Boy†, â€Å"You Are My Sunshine†, â€Å"Clementine†, â€Å"Pan’s Labyrinth Lullaby†, â€Å"Headphones†, parts of â€Å"Circles† by Hollywood Undead. Each song has a special meaning that I associate with it, although some of the meanings overlap. â€Å"Fur Elise† is special because it is a song that is so much fun to play on piano and to listen to. I grew up listening Stuart and Jocelyn, my older sibling, playing it all the time. Stuart would play it as fast as he possibly could, watching his fingers fly across the keys was exhilarating as a child. Then Jocelyn would come and play next, all tame and smooth compared to Stuart’s wildness. Both variations were beautiful, especially when they put expression in, hearing the music flow from loud to quiet from soft to powerful was amazing. The best part though was when they would play â€Å"Fur Elise† together, it was magical,
